Our Journey
The vision of a new traditional nursery where father and son are working together, with plenty of help from the family. Glenn Charlton has always dreamed of opening his own nursery and with the help of Dean Charlton who trained at Great Dixter, and Sister Lauren as Media wiz, we aim to create a horticultural hub in the heart of Hooton Roberts.
Dean spent six years working at the Arts and Crafts garden of Great Dixter in East Sussex. Three years training in the garden under the guidance of head gardener Fergus Garrett, and three in the nursery with manager Michael Morphy.
The gardening world is such a generous and giving one. Great Dixter has always trained students and sent each back out into the world with a little Dixter spirit.
'Be generous in the way that you garden, and the way you share it with others' - Fergus Garrett.
Dean has been inspired by many fabulous gardens and nurseries that I have visited over the years. Gardens include Le Jardin de plume in Normandy, Keith Wileys Wildside garden in Devon and Charlotte and Donald Molesworths garden in Beneden. Nurseries include Marchants Hardy Plants and De Hessenhof Nursery in the Netherlands.
With the growing skills and knowledge of Dean and Glenn, and help and support of the family including Aunties, Uncles, cousins, kids and friends, we hope to create a keystone of horticultural excellence in the region. A huge thank you now and the foreseeable future to family and friends.

O u r V i s i o n
We are a small independent nursery and garden housed within the old sandstone walls of a former kitchen garden, nestled in the beautiful Hooton Roberts village, in Rotherham.
Hooton's Walled Nursery promises to be a place to inspire, both gardener and amateur alike, looking to buy hardy, garden worthy perennials. As you walk through our living catalogue of plants, placed in rows of stock beds you can visually see they are growing in Rotherham and have the highest success of going in your garden.
Using a peat free compost and traditional propagation techniques (which is a rare thing these days) follow us on our journey to develop and grow a traditional nursery in the heart of Hooton Roberts. We aim to restore this heritage site back to it's former glory
